Why Now? Prior to the pandemic, there was an increased interest in biophilic design and outdoor solutions for urban branding and revitalization projects. Cities, developers, communities and even school districts are now addressing the dangers of COVID-19 and the effects of global warming. A recent study in June 2020 conducted by the Global Cities program of the University of São Paulo (USP) carried out the research Emoções Momentâneas (lit. Momentary Emotions) to measure how the pandemic was changing the relationship of individuals with public spaces in São Paulo. 86% of the surveyed people wanted to spend time in green environments such as parks and squares. Architect, Deize Sanches, who was involved in the research says there is “...a desire to see the potential of green spaces to improve the quality of life in a way that was not being experienced before the pandemic." We are seeing a three-fold increased demand for beautiful, functional, outdoor spaces that not only provide shelter from the elements but also offer safe places with plenty of air flow and space for physical distancing. |
