ABOUT US

GuildWorks is a full service design, specification, fabrication and installation enterprise committed to broadening the spectrum of imagination.  We specialize in innovative custom solutions providing fabric architecture, tension structures, and fabric-formed environments for any imaginable application.  For over twenty years GuildWorks has been a laboratory at the intersections of art and architecture, intuition and engineering, originality and experience. We design, produce, and install all of our own works, always learning and expanding our capabilities and systems.

Our signature style comes through dedication to design principles found in nature. We incorporate these with specialized software, custom hardware and frameworks, and advanced architectural fabrics to create robust, elegant, and materially efficient installations and structures.

Design From Nature’s Principles

GuildWorks design inspiration comes from structures in nature and the inherent synergy of forces in the universe. At scales from atomic to astronomical, nature exists as tension-integral structures. Tension systems are the most materially efficient and stable way for the universe to build. GuildWorks was founded with this vision of creating shelter with the fewest material resources, using design from nature’s principles and the elegant geometries of tension fabric structures.

Sustainability
As a forward-thinking company in a rapidly changing climate, we see that choices we make can have profound effects on the world we live in. In our approach to Design from Nature’s Principles, the same inherent geometries of tension structures that give our architecture its graceful arcs and sweeping curves help us to be efficient and functional with materials and resources. For us, design and build is an interplay with the world at large.

We create structures with a fraction of the materials used for similar function in traditional building styles. This material efficiency makes every part of our building process more sustainable. There is less raw weight in material produced, lower transport needs, less heavy equipment and machinery required, and higher efficiency in design, production, and installation. The organic shapes of our installations allow us to be creative with airflow, water collection, and storm water management.

Architectural fabrics we use are highly durable. Their useful lifetime is comparable to traditional roofing materials. They last 15-30 years, in some cases even longer, and many are recyclable. All of our event fabrics and components of temporary installations are reused and re-purposed.

The “heat island effect” creates warmer climates in urban environments, as so thermal energy is absorbed by traditional building materials and massing. Architectural fabrics are “Cool Materials” - they are highly solar reflective and have far-infrared thermal emissivity. Because the surface temperatures of our fabrics are lower than those of typical building materials, less heat is exchanged between the building and the surrounding air. When looking at the natural interplay of air currents interrupted by traditional squared-off buildings, fabric structures can make a significant impact on the urban "heat island".

We would be happy to talk to you more about the sustainability aspects of fabric architecture, about LEED points and how Architecture of the Air can help your project and your environment to be more sustainable.

Beauty in Structure and Grace in Movement.

OUR PROCESS

Design
GuildWorks is recognized as a design leader in the world of tension fabric structures and fabric architecture.  Our team has over 50 years of collective experience, background and training in; Architecture, Planning, Tension Structure Design, Tension Structure Engineering and Specification, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Construction Industry and Mechanical Engineering. We will work closely with you and your team to produce a successful project with creative sophistication.

Specification
Our in house design team, utilizes the latest FEM & CAD programs allowing us to look at wind loading, water flow, 3d shaping, structural requirements and other factors in the design and specification of tension structures. Our history of successful projects has taught us what it takes to build secure structures and our team manages a lot of advanced planning to ensure everything goes according to plan on site.

Fabrication
Our advanced in-house fabric production team offers custom fabrication to fit the needs of many types of clients.  From lightweight interior projects to durable long lasting outdoor fabric architecture, we continually research and explore ways to innovate our craft and fabrication techniques. We utilize many different manufacturing techniques specific to each project and have even developed our own lightweight fabrics for special event shade and rain protection.
